Sorry for not being clear Creamy, it's Ampersand L T Semicolon, not I T. The lt is short for "less than", the ampersand at the beginning and semicolon at the end are "hey guys, this here's code and we want a funny character instead!" You can also use it for the end HTML tag with gt (>, greater than), and for special characters like ♥ (& hearts ;- you can also get the 3 other card suits the same way, ♠ ♣ ♦- spades, clubs, diams).
And I really should have escaped all of those with & (short for, of course, ampersand) instead of being lazy and leaving the spaces. < for instance, you should be able to just copy paste and go.
A lot of the special characters aren't supported on all fonts, so be aware when using them- < is with anything but wacky specialty fonts that didn't do a full character set, since it's super common and useful. I believe they're all supported by the major commonly used fonts like Verdana though. Previews on certain post type things will also mangle special characters and escape the &s sometimes.
I can't find a decent listing of everything to save my life right now, but http://www.degraeve.com/reference/specialcharacters.php doesn't _totally_ suck.
